Canadians were shocked and saddened by the death of a Winnipeg mom and her two young children this summer. Today comes the news that Allyson McConnell , convicted of murdering her two sons and deported to her native Australia, has been found dead, of an apparent suicide.
The birth of a child is almost always an occasion of great joy. But not always. Many Canadian new mothers struggle with postpartum depression, and often, programs and supports for them are sadly lacking. This month, an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal called attention to this problem. It recommends a regular audit of maternal suicide deaths as a good place to start.
